TOKYO - Conrad Tokyo celebrates the award of a coveted MICHELIN star to its newly opened modern French dining sensation, 'Collage'. In its seventh edition of the guide to the best dining and hotels in Tokyo, Yokohama and Shonan, the MICHELIN Guide 2014 has once again placed Conrad Tokyo in the very highest MICHELIN luxury accommodation category.

"We are absolutely delighted to receive these prestigious accolades, particularly for our newest restaurant 'Collage'," said Conrad Tokyo General Manager Heinrich Grafe. "The culinary team led by Chef Shinya Maeda is truly dedicated to creating the very best dining experience so it is wonderful to see this passion recognized at such an early stage."

The influential independent Guide is based entirely on rigorous anonymous visits to restaurants and hotels to assess the quality of products and services offered to all customers. Stars are awarded for the quality of cuisine meaning Conrad Tokyo is home to one of the finest restaurants in the Japanese capital and among the best restaurants in the world.

The Guide also awarded Collage the symbol for "top class comfort", reflecting the restaurant's new chic interiors designed by London-based G.A. International Design. It referred to Chef Maeda's acclaimed culinary style saying: "The chef's idea of skillfully combining classic and modern techniques comes through in the flavors, and the modern presentation makes the dishes visually appealing." The 2014 Guide also highlighted Chef Maeda's creative mix of tradition and innovation with: "Cubed foie gras takes full advantage of the characteristics of each part of the duck; smoked salmon comes with dill ice cream and capers, dismantling and reconstructing tradition in an original creation." The restaurant's extensive wine list featuring wines from France was also noted with the award of a symbol for an "interesting wine list".

"This is the ultimate accolade for any chef," said Shinya Maeda who, before launching Collage in August 2013, previously won a MICHELIN star for five consecutive years while at the helm of
Gordon Ramsay previously at Conrad Tokyo. "Collage reflects my personal passion for modern French cuisine and to receive recognition by MICHELIN after being open for just four months is the greatest honour.

It is truly the highlight of my culinary career." Placing the hotel in the very highest MICHELIN accommodation category with five red pavilions (hotels are evaluated for comfort and rated from one to five pavilions in either black or red, with red indicating a higher level of comfort), the prestigious Guide also applauded Conrad Tokyo's spacious rooms offering guests a choice of garden or city views and featuring décor reflecting their respective urban or nature themes. The view from Bay View rooms overlooking Tokyo Bay were described as having "captivating" views of Rainbow Bridge and Hamarikyu Gardens while rooms on the 37th floor were strongly recommended for their unusually high ceilings. The hotel was also noted as a leader in style and as being "highly convenient" for both business and leisure travelers alike. The hotel's wide range of relaxation facilities, including a 25-meter indoor pool and spa were also highlighted.

BackgroundThis year's Guide reaffirms Tokyo as the world's leading MICHELIN starred city with more topranked restaurants than any other city covered by MICHELIN. Speaking at the unveiling ceremony Bernard Delmas, president of Nihon Michelin Tire Co., said the Guide's goal is to "communicate to many people the greatness of gastronomy".

One of the oldest European hotel and restaurant guides, the MICHELIN guide began in 1908 as simple recommendations of food and accommodation throughout France. In 1926 the Guide introduced the star to note good cooking. Two and three stars were added in the early 1930s. MICHELIN updates its guides every year. Its continued popularity is due to its rigorous and anonymous evaluation that gives a consistent guide to the best hotels and restaurants in each comfort and price category.
